ALGIERS, ALGERIA (Catholic Online) - Putin visited Egypt ahead of the Minsk peace meeting between Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany, returning to Russia on February 10.
This Lent season, are you doing good?
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi of Egypt announced that his country had entered into a free trade deal with the Eurasian Union, an economic pact created by Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in May of 2014.
With this deal, Egypt hopes for economic stability that a larger power can provide, and to remove their dependance on the U.S. dollar; Putin may see this as widening his net of potential allies to deter the U.S. and the West from taking any action against Russian interests.
The meeting was also about opening tourist relations between the two countries. About three millions Russian tourists visited Egypt in 2013, and that number is expected to steadily rise.
Putin and al-Sisi also signed a memorandum which revealed that a nuclear power plant would be constructed in Dabaa, and an industrial center would be set up in the Suez Canal region, with the help of the Russians.
February is a month for love and devotion.
Both countries also agreed to continuing military cooperation and attempting to end the fighting in Syria, Libya, Iraq and Yemen, and dealing with the Israeli and Palestinian issue.
This is a major bone of contention between Russia and the U.S., especially in Syria, where Russia backs the regime of Bashar al-Assad-in conjunction with Iran-while the U.S. and most of the Western world are backing the moderate rebels, primarily the so-called Free Syrian Army.
