Chadian troops were attacked by militants along the Cameroon-Nigeria border, and after a gun battle the Nigerian town of Gamboru Ngala was retaken, which had been in the hands of Boko Haram for months.
Nine Chadian soldiers were killed in the fighting, but the local Islamist garrison was "completely wiped out," a statement from the Chad government reported.
This is Chad's second incursion into Nigeria in less than a week as part of a multi-national task force assigned to battle Boko Haram, created by the African Union earlier this month.
Chad is the preeminent military power in Africa, and was instrumental in pushing an al-Qaeda affiliated group out of Mali, aiding French forces. However, Nigeria has largely downplayed Chad's role in the war against Boko Haram, attempting to put off criticisms that the Nigerian government has been largely ineffective or even unwilling to take the fight to the Islamist group.
Diplomats from Western nations have been perturbed by Nigeria's handling of the Boko Haram situation, but believe Chad's intervention may be a true game changers.
"As usual, they are doing the job," one diplomat from the West said in a text message. "Above all with their planes, and their helicopters."
February is a month for love and devotion.
Despite Nigeria's snub, Chad officials are unwilling to relent in their attack against the Islamists.
"Chad's forces are determined to crush this force of evil," said Chad's information minister, Hassan Sylla Bakari, on Wednesday. "We are absolutely determined because Boko Haram is a threat to the entire subregion. They want to asphyxiate the Chadian economy by blocking our outlets in Nigeria and Cameroon."
