'She kept telling me she was 'worried about her friends'...'

Six-year-old Alexis Barnes was dressed in a glittery pink dress for her 6th birthday party at a roller rink but her smile slowly disappeared as none of the 17 guests made an appearance.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Alexis suffers from Alopecia, an autoimmune disease in which her immune system doesn't recognize her hair follicles, so it attacks them and results in hair loss.

Thankfully, it is a painless condition and does not result in serious health problems. It does not interfere with everyday life and is not contagious.

Regardless, not having hair for a young girl might be taxing, which made Alexis' heartbreaking situation worse.

On her Facebook wall, Alexis' mother Jessica Barnes wrote: "Kinda sad for Alexis today. We celebrated her 6th birthday at the roller rink and we invited all 17 of her classmates and not one friend showed up to her birthday party today.

"We skated with her and did cake and stuff with family. She kept telling me she was "worried about her friends" looking around seeing all the other kids with their friends celebrating their birthdays up there and I didn't really know what to tell her other than sometimes moms and dads get busy...."

After posting to Facebook, people immediately began sharing the story and wishing Alexis a happy birthday.

Since it was posted on Sunday, Alexis' tale has been shared 525 times and received 1.6 thousand comments.

Hours after it went viral, Jessica wrote: "I'm officially in awe and lost for words. Life has a way of taking things that happen and turning them around for the better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

The very next day, strangers in the Barnes' area decided to throw a second party for Alexis, one that would most definitely include a large guest list.

"So next Sunday the community is throwing Alexis a surprise birthday party! Everyone is invited!" Jessica posted.

She explained how her post went viral and how her little girl's face lit up at all the birthday well-wishes.

"And then the most incredible thing happened," Jessica shared. "I got a message from someone asking if they could throw her a surprise birthday party.

"My eyes filled up with tears. I started reading all the comments and how everyone in the community was posting about wanting to come and celebrate this little girl's birthday and I found myself lost for words. It's surreal and the most awe inspiring feeling and I am truly humbled by all the love and well wishes.

"Thank you Charlie Diggs for planning her surprise party. And thank you to each and every person who has sent a kind comment or message. Alexis has a huge heart and I think this little girl is going to be lost for words herself and in such awe on Sunday when we surprise her!

"People have the power to change lives with random acts of kindness. And we plan to pay it forward in whatever way we can."

Alexis still has no idea about the amazing surprise party and her family is thrilled. They told Chron there were "absolutely no hard feelings" toward the guests who missed the first party.
