MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Maria Colon woke up Thursday morning from the smell of smoke caused by the fire burning inside her Philadelphia home. The 60-years-old Puerto Rico native lost her eyesight in 1992 and lives with her golden retriever, who jumped in and called the police using her specialized phone.
According to Colon, she realized she was inhaling smoke and felt it hard to breathe when she shouted the emergency word "danger" to her dog.
"I hear the phone - tke, tke, tke. And she's growling. And I said, 'Oh my lord, she called the police,'" said Colon, according to the NBC Philadelphia. Firefighters showed up and controlled the fire, rescuing Colon and Yolanda.
The woman was taken into Nazareth Hospital, where she was treated for smoke inhalation, while the heroic dog was taken to Penn Ryan Veterinary Hospital due to a scratched eye and smoke inhalation. She was given gifts for her bravery.
"I'm her Mommy, and she loves me too much," said Colon. She was reunited with her hero the following night.
According to Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, this was not the first time Yolanda called 911 and saved Colon's life.
"Last year Yolanda's owner fell in the house and was unconscious, she called 9-1-1 then too! Yolanda is a superhero!" wrote Red Paw in their Facebook page. The dog also did the same in 2013 after burglars entered their home.
