MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - According to the Methodist Women's Hospital spokesperson Claudia Bohn, baby Angel was brought home with Karla's parents, Modesto and Berta Jimenez, an arrangement agreed upon with the infant's father.
The baby was born weighing less than 3lbs but has gained about 4lbs since his birth. Karla's first pregnancy went well with her first child, Genesis, now three-years-old.
Karla was only 22 weeks along in the pregnancy when she collapsed. About one hundred doctors, nurses and staff in the hospital worked to keep her alive, as well as the baby safe.
Doctors found that the 22-year-old pregnant Karla had bleeding in the brain; it was determined that she was brain dead. Weeks later, her condition worsened but the family expressed their wish to keep the baby alive no matter what.
April 4, Angel was born and admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit. Days later, Karla was pronounced dead. Her organs are to be donated, according to The Daily Mail. Some staff believed Angel was too small to survive the emergency C-section, but he made it through the procedure.
Now considered a miracle baby, Angel weighs about 7lbs and remains in the care of his maternal grandparents.
Medical literature worldwide, according to the hospital, has reported a number of similar cases since 1982.
