Allowing young kids to read books about something controversial is considered by most as one aggressive move. Recently, in Mitchell Primary School, school officials publicly stated their apology for allowing kindergarten through third grade students to read a book about a transgender child.

span style="line-height: 1.22;">MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Superintendent Allyn Hutton admitted the parents should be informed ahead of time when their kids need to read books about sensitive topics at school. However, this was not the situation with the students at Mitchell Primary School.
Keep God's message with you always -- A Bible is all you need Hutton explained that with the school's situation, that should have never happened, the whole point of teaching the topic was to teach the young kids about tolerance and respect among individuals at school.
This statement was also supported by Dana Richerich's blog, where she cites the audience "are too young" for these sensitive issues. However, she said that it is better to nurture these attitudes, especially respective differences and it is never "too early" for them to learn.
A recent post by renowned Fox News host, Sean Hannity, highlighted the angry statement from a mother of one of the students of Mitchell Primary School. According to her, she was not informed by the school or at least given an advanced warning that the teachers would be allowing their students to read the book entitled, "I am Jazz" written by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings.
The mother expressed her frustrations to the school's inability to provide advanced notice to parents like her for such sensitive and controversial topics to discuss in class.
The school's move has upset her, because she felt that Mitchell Primary never gave her an option to teach what she thinks is right for her child.
This boils down to the kind of approach the school has implemented for this discussion, because based on Richerich's statement, having these children learn respect amid differences is something they should learn about. Aside from that, by talking about these issues, students can cultivate the sense of inclusiveness and critical thinking.
What the parents are disappointed about is the fact that the school did not take into consideration that every parent has a say in this matter, especially about talking these topics out with their young kids.
