Supreme Court's decision to look into marriage is a threat to traditional marriage

On January 16, the Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, warned of a growing war on the "essential meaning of marriage," as defining "a bond which unites a man and a woman to each other and to any children who come from their union."

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - His comments were a response to the United States Supreme Court, which has decided to rule on the legal definition of marriage within the U.S., and also whether a state has the right to bar same-sex couples from marrying, or if marriage is a right protected under the Constitution.

Combat corruption with moral education; send a Bible to a child, or another person in need.

A decision from the Supreme Court could come down as soon as June of 2015.

Cordileone, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, said that the upcoming case is "the most significant Court decision since the Court's tragic 1973 Roe v. Wade decision," which made abortion a protected right of women.

"It's hard to imagine how the essential meaning of marriage as between the two sexes, understood in our nation for over two hundred years, and consistent with every society throughout all of human history, could be declared illegal," a statement from the Archbishop said.

It's easy to take care of one's physical health, but what about spiritual health?

"To those arguing for a constitutional redefinition of marriage, one must ask: when did the Constitution suddenly mandate a novel and unfounded definition of marriage?

"The central issue as stake is: what is marriage? The answer is: a bond which unites a man and a woman to each other and to any children who come from their union. Only a man and a woman can unite their bodies in a way that creates a new human being. Marriage is thus a unique and beautiful reality which a society respects to its benefit or ignores to its peril."
