San Cristobal de Licia es un martir importante en la historia del cristianismo de Oriente y Occidente que vivio durante el gobierno de Decio, tercer emperador romano, cerca del ano 250 DC.

REDACCION CENTRAL (ACI Prensa) - Su famosa leyenda, que es conocida sobre todo en Occidente y podria haberse extraido de la antigua mitologia griega, cuenta que el porto a un chico, al que no conocia, a traves de un rio antes de que el nino le revelase que era Cristo.

Su nombre en griego fue Christophoros" y significa el portador de Cristo". Desde el siglo IV fue representado con el nino Jesus sobre sus hombros y llevando un baston con hojas.

Era creencia comun que bastaba mirar su imagen para que el viajero se viese libre de todo peligro durante aquel dia. Por ello es considerado patron de peregrinos, viajeros, motoristas y transportistas en general.

Segun la tradicion fue un hombre de gran estatura y se desempeno como soldado del Imperio Romano; tambien se dice que tenia un alma caritativa y trataba de ayudar a los cristianos cautivos.

Cristobal fue bautizado en Antioquia y se dirigio sin demora a predicar a Licia y a Samos. Alli fue encarcelado por el rey Dagon, que estaba a las ordenes del emperador Decio, y tras resistirse abdicar de su fe con varios intentos de tortura, se ordeno degollarlo. Segun Gualterio de Espira, la nacion Siria y el mismo Dagon se convirtieron a Cristo gracias este santo.

San Cristobal es un Santo muy popular, y poetas modernos como Garcia Lorca y Antonio Machado, lo han cantado con inspiradas estrofas. Su estatua, siempre colosal y gigantesca, decora muchisimas catedrales, como la de Toledo.
