SISTER ALICE MARIE QUINN, DAUGHTER OF CHARITY & FOUNDER OF
ST. VINCENT MEALS ON WHEELS HAS DIED AT 82

She founded organization 40 years ago and led it to become the nation's largest privately funded senior nutrition program

Los Angeles, CA - Sister Alice Marie Quinn, Daughter of Charity, Founder and Executive Director of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels (STVMOW), has died of natural causes at the age of 82, it was announced by Sister Patricia Miguel, D C.

"Our hearts are filled with sorrow and with love as we say goodbye to our dear Sister Alice Marie," stated Sister Patricia Miguel,  "her life of service has inspired everyone who knew her.  She never wavered in her commitment to serve the homebound seniors and those living in poverty. May the Lord have mercy on her soul as she is received by her loving Creator."

Sister Patricia affirmed that although the program was created by Sister Alice Marie, whose pioneering leadership and indefatigable spirit drove its expansion, its foundation and funding is solid and will continue to address the needs of the clients served. The Daughters of Charity have named long-time STVMOW Director of Development Daryl Twerdahl as the Interim Executive Director, effective immediately.

A registered dietician, Sister Alice Marie founded the program in Los Angeles on July 7, 1977, with a single pot of stew in a church basement for 83 seniors in attendance. She had noticed that many poor, elderly people living near St. Vincent Medical Center, where she had served as assistant dietary director, weren't eating regularly or properly, with their physical, mental and emotional well-being suffering as a result.

Since those modest beginnings, Sister Alice Marie has grown the program comprising a staff of 78 and more than 300 volunteers who prepare, deliver and serve thousands of meals each day, including hot meals and frozen meals, as well as weekly breakfast deliveries across Los Angeles.  STVMOW serves over 1,800 mostly elderly, frail Angelenos every day and is the nation's largest, privately funded organization of its kind.

Sister Alice Marie's groundbreaking work in the field of senior nutrition and combatting hunger has not gone unnoticed; among the accolades both she and St. Vincent Meals on Wheels have garnered are Recipient of the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association (IFMA) Silver Plate Award in 2006, for outstanding achievement in Specialty Food Services; being named "Woman of the Year" in 1988 by the State of California; and in 2013, the Los Angeles City Council declared the day before Thanksgiving as St. Vincent Meals on Wheels Day in L.A.

Daryl Twerdahl, who first began as a volunteer with St. Vincent Meals on Wheels in 1989 and has served as the president of Cuisine a Roulettes, the fundraising arm of STVMOW, commented, "Sister Alice Marie mentored us, loved us, chided us, but above all else, she taught us to serve with compassion and respect.  We will continue her legacy with every meal served."
