LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - It is unknown when Christians were last persecuted at rates seen in 2015-2016. According to the latest statistics from the Center for Studies on New Religions and Vatican Radio, about 500,000 Christians around the world are unable to practice their faith freely, and in 2016, 90,000 were killed for their faith, a rate that equals one every six minutes.
The majority of the killings appear to be in Africa, where seventy percent were linked to tribal warfare. The other 30 percent, about 27,000, were killed in terrorist attacks, which happened daily in 2016.
Islamic persecution of Christians remains a prime motivator of violence.
In 2015, 105,000 Christians were killed, making that year the worst ever recorded. However, they say the statistics don't include India and China where Christians persecution also takes place but is virtually never recorded.
The Catholic Church is considering declaring all those killed by ISIS for their faith sanctified.
Jesus Christ warned that Christians would face persecution, and the Bible warns in the last days those persecutions would intensify. It is important for all Christians to be prepared, for we know not the hour.
