LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Vatican and Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) have been working towards reconciliation since 2000, and their work may come to fruition as Pope Francis and Bishop Bernard Fellay continue to bring the two institutions closer together.
Bishop Fellay has told the National Catholic Register that he is "persuaded, at least in part, by a different approach," on behalf of Pope Francis. He credits Pope Francis with a new emphasis on "saving souls and finding a way to do it."
On May 16, Pope Francis remarked that the SSPX "Catholics are on the way to full communion" and a "good dialogue and good work are taking place."
According to the Bishop, the Vatican is signaling that it is acceptable for members of SSPX to question some aspects of Church doctrine and remain full Catholics in communion with Rome.
Pope Francis held a private audience with Bishop Fellay last month. During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has also validated confessions within the SSPX.
It is possible the reconciliation between the Vatican and SSPX could occur within the next month.
