Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The event was launched with a hymn and prayer, then Reverend Rob Schenck, the president of the National Clergy Council, began the reading with Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God created heaven and earth."
People took turns to read passages of the Bible, with the goal being the last scripture in Revelations concluding on May 5.
"[D]uring these five days, hundreds of Bible believers will travel to the West Front of the U.S. Capitol to read a portion of the Bible, to listen and to pray," the event's co-director Rev. Michael Hall explained. "The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon began in 1990. The event serves to honor the Bible, celebrate religious freedom and unite the diverse branches of Christianity around the Bible."
According to the Marathon website, "The public reading of God's Holy Word will call the nation to return to God's precepts and will lay a solid foundation for the National Day of Prayer."
The event is currently underway and Rev. Hall stated the goal is always to honor God's Word, to celebrate Christians' First Amendment freedom of speech, assembly and religion as well as to set aside denominational differences and commune together around the Bible.
Isaiah 55:11, "so it is with the word that goes from my mouth: it will not return to me unfulfilled or before having carried out my good pleasure and having achieved what it was sent to do," serves as the foundation of the Marathon.
When the Marathon concludes, the closing ceremony is set to include Rev. Shcenck joining Hall and Terry Hall from The People's Church, though what the trio will be doing has not been clarified.
There are 100 translations of the Holy Bible available for all readers to participate and gospel artists Nathan Kistler and Karen Knight are expected to perform at the event as well.
