NEW YORK, NY (Catholic Online) - Bruzzese believes she is in the road to recovery after meeting Pope Francis and being blessed by the pontiff during his visit to the United States.
Julia suffered sudden paralysis which remains to be unexplained. It is assumed to be early symptoms of Lyme disease. However, there were no signs of the disease in her blood, leaving her doctors bewildered.
Julia and her mother got the chance to meet the pope at the JFK airport during a greeting.
"He looked me right in the eyes; I kissed his hand and thanked him, and I walked away [saying] 'she's gonna be okay,'" shared Julia's mother, Josephine. Julia shared that the opportunity she had was "the most precious moment" of her life.
Five days after her papal encounter, her doctor was able to detect Lyme disease in Julia's blood. Finally, there was a proper diagnosis and a treatment plan could be enacted for the child.
"The miracle has begun," Julia said. "Yesterday, I went to the doctor and for the first time they saw Lyme disease activity in my blood, and that just shows a miracle can happen if you believe, just like I did. If you believe and pray everything can happen."
Julia is also confident that she will be able to walk again. "It means that he's going to give me a miracle to walk again," the girl said. "I know I will walk again because of him."
This is the second time that the pontiff has been credited for performing a miracle. Last September, an American couple from Argentina, the Pope's homeland, claimed that the Pope was the reason their 3-month-old daughter's heart condition was healed. After meeting the Pope during the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII, one of the holes in the child's heart completely closed and one was reduced to half its size.
