"Raise a voice for the hungry," Pope Francis tweeted in support of his 'Week of Action' to fight world hunger. From October 12-18, the 'Week of Action' is intended to bring awareness to Catholics about world hunger and to motivate them to actually do something about it.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The 'Week of Action' is a week-long campaign focusing on world hunger and feeding the poor. The world is increasingly looking toward the Catholic Church as the agency that will eradicate world hunger within the next decade or less as distributions networks improve and the Church leverages the power of its 1.3 billion members.
The Week of Action is a major effort and despite announcements and special collections, most people have no idea just how close the Catholic Church is to eradicating hunger, almost singlehandedly.
Studies by the UN, the Catholic Church, and secular organizations have all confirmed that the world is close to being able to eradicate absolute poverty and world hunger by 2025. Improvements in infrastructure and production are the secret solution to a problem which has plagued humanity since the beginning of time.
Act now to save people from hunger. We're close to our goal and we need you to make the difference!
As infrastructure improves, it becomes easier to supply food to people in areas where it is scarce. Already, production levels are sufficient to provide every living person on Earth with enough calories to survive. It remains a problem of distribution.
However, there is another problem. Distributing food requires people to care. People must care enough to purchase and supply the food and to transport it. World leaders have been hard pressed to find room in their budgets to sustain the hundreds of millions of hungry people around the world. Political considerations create barriers because aid is often exchanged rather than simply given.
In order to solve the problem, the world needs an actor who is not interested in a return. That actor can only be the Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church is remarkably unique. It is the only institution guided exclusively by moral principles. It is globally distributed and in many parts of the world, it is the Church that provides the only social services available. The Church does not seek repayment or compensation, and it's large. With 1.3 billion Catholics, there are enough people to make a tremendous difference when they are motivated.
The movement relies on the Pope, who is the lynchpin in the solution. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, represents these 1.3 billion Catholics. His word is taken very seriously and carries tremendous weight. When Pope Francis speaks, people listen.
Pope Francis has a special vocation to help the poor, impoverished, the hungry and disenfranchised. Nearly a year ago, he pledged to eradicate world hunger. He is the only man on Earth capable of motivating individuals like you and me, to do our part. He also stands at the head of a global distribution network that remains remarkably free of corruption, unlike conventional, political networks.
Pope Francis has asked every Catholic around the world to give something to help feed others. We should not turn away from people who are different from us. Instead, we must embrace these people as our brothers and sisters and make room for them at our tables.
Act now to respond to Pope Francis' call and to feed hungry people. If you can feed 100 people, please do so. If you can't feed 100 people, then feed just one. Your choice right now, makes a difference for someone else a world away. Be the difference, now.
