In a greeting to the students and faculty of the Vatican Observatory Summer School on June 20, Pope Francis drew inspiration from Psalm 8, highlighting the unique ability of human beings to observe and contemplate the universe. He quoted the psalmist, who marvels at the place of humanity in creation, recognizing both its fragility and its exalted nature.
The pope encouraged the young astronomers to maintain their sense of wonder not only in their scientific pursuits but also in their daily lives. He urged them to be guided by a love for truth and to be awestruck by the vastness and beauty that each aspect of the universe presents to them.
The Vatican Observatory Summer School, initiated in 1986 and held at Castel Gandolfo, serves as a platform for young scientists from around the world to study under leading experts in astronomy. This year, the school is focused on themes such as big data and machine learning, providing students with valuable experience in data analysis. The program had experienced a five-year hiatus, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pope Francis mentioned recent technological advancements in astronomical observation, specifically highlighting the James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, and the forthcoming Vera Rubin Observatory. The pope expressed his enthusiasm for the astonishing images and discoveries made possible by these tools.
Acknowledging the immensity of the universe as a source of wonder for humanity, Pope Francis recognized the scholars' efforts to explore its vast expanse using new technologies. He emphasized the need to be open to unexpected discoveries and not be limited by preconceived notions, reminding them that true wisdom and expertise are essential in interpreting scientific results.
The pope encouraged the scholars not to neglect other important aspects of reality, such as compassion and love, which can be encountered through friendships and connections with others. He emphasized the value of being surprised and urged them to remain open to the unexpected.
Pope Francis composed his letter while recovering from abdominal surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. Despite his condition, he conveyed his best wishes to the participants of the summer school, blessing them and expressing his desire for their fruitful days of study and friendship. He also asked for their prayers.
The Vatican Observatory, re-established by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 with a long history of papal support for astronomical research, was originally located near St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. However, it was later relocated to Castel Gandolfo under Pope Pius XI due to the impact of light pollution from the city.
