LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - AZGS sent a drone to examine a giant fissure that formed between March 2013 and December 2014.
Normally, fissures aren't very interesting to people outside geology circles but this fissure spans over 2-miles-long and may have serious repercussions on the environment.
According to Arizona's Earth Fissure Center, earth fissures coincide with ground water mining.
Fissures span over a mile in length and, during times of torrential rains such as the annual monsoons Arizona experiences, the erosion can create a serious hazard to people and infrastructure. Moreover, the fissures are perfect conduits for runoff and contaminated waters in basin aquifiers.
Joe Cook of the Arizona Geological Survey told 12 News that the fissure could have been an underground void that didn't surface until after a 2016 monsoon.
According to Daily Mail, drone footage reveals the true extent of the large fissure.

The giant fissure splits the desert's surface in Tator Hills of Pinal County (U.S. Gov).
People appear miniature beside the massive crack.
A spokesman explained: "AZGS is experimenting with drone technology as a tool for mapping fissures and other surface features, e.g. landslide masses."
At this time there is no evidence of contaminated waters but the geological society is keeping an eye out.
The only real concern is for off-road motorists and cattle farmers. Livestock can fall to their deaths or simply get stuck in the large fissure while ATVs in the area can also risk a dangerous situation.
There are also warnings about sudden cave-ins, so if you live in Arizona, please avoid the dangerous fault.
