LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "Take care that no one deceives you," Jesus admonished his disciples in the book of Matthew. The Disciples were concerned that the last days could come within their lifetime and they wanted to know what signs they should expect. Ever since this time, faithful Christians have looked for the warning signs that the end of the world is near.

There's plenty of bad news and right now, earthquakes and volcanoes are getting a lot of play. What is causing an entire planet to convulse with quakes and eruptions?

Even though the news is filled with reports of volcanoes and quakes, there is nothing exceptional about the numbers we're seeing. The average number of volcanoes erupting at any given time is 35. The common range for normal is between a low of 24 to a high of 50. That means fifty volcanoes could be erupting at a given moment an scientists would not be alarmed. Of course, rise above that number and there would be a lot more attention paid.

The reason why volcanic activity is featuring prominently in the news is because several of the volcanoes, such as in Alaska and especially Popocatepetl near Mexico City are near population centers.

The quakes we've seen in the news have been unusually strong and close together in time, as well as close to population centers, but none of there's nothing alarming about their distribution or frequency. They have not been linked to planetary alignments, or the moon, nor to any other events occurring on Earth or in space.

In short, the sensationalism is contrived, and those who have been told the end is near, could be deceived.

As Christians, we believe in the Second Coming of Christ and we have every reason to think this is imminent. We are also justified in living our lives with this expectation. It is a fact that any person's life can end abruptly, thus subjecting us to immediate judgment without the benefit of preparation.

Therefore, we must always be prepared, so that when Christ returns, or we travel to meet Him ourselves, we are not found lacking in merit.
