LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The climate talks are due to commence this year in Paris; with that in mind, Al Gore's belief that the modern world is collapsing has given him cause to speak out to encourage people of the world to change their ways.
These startling videos feature floodwaters that destroyed roads and bridges, methane that blows holes in Siberia, hot air melting airport runways and air pollution so thick it shortened the life expectancy of China's citizens by several years.
A three hour presentation during trainings in Miami this week focused strongly on the dwindling life expectancy of Chinese citizens.
Gore shared, "The world that we have built was built for different conditions."
He then lamented to the audience of nearly 1,000 people who came from 80 countries around the world to attend the three-day climate training session. Gore spoke about the killer heat waves, parching droughts, a media that can't relate or identify the differences between extreme weather and global warming, as well as the "crazy short-term thinking" of politicians who deny climate change is real.
"Don't let anybody tell you that we are going to get on rocket ships and go to Mars and live in hermetically sealed buildings. We couldn't even evacuate the city of New Orleans when a hurricane hit there," Gore scoffed. "The scientists have long since told us we have to change, but now, Mother Nature is saying it with water in the streets in this city," he added.
The second day of the three-day-conference held a panel led by Gore, who shared the stage with NASA expert Eric Rignot, who believes 20 to 30 feet of sea level rise is inevitable. He admitted he didn't know when the rise would take place but that it definitely would.
If the sea level rose thirty feet, seaside cities would be submerged. Gore said the sea level will rise 6.5 feet before the end of this century.
"Despair is paralyzing," Gore said, adding, "We can't deliver that message."
Julie Arnold, an employee for NexAmp Solar in Boston, attended the conference and told AFP, "I think he pulled together a lot of new things I had not seen, and I am someone that reads about this constantly just being in the business and being an environmentalist. It struck me enormously because I hadn't realized how serious it was."
She admitted she was working on a plan to deliver a shorter version of Gore's presentation to kids from middle to high school in an attempt to motivate them to change.
The Climate Leadership reality Corps Training aims to teach people to give similar presentations to their communities. Each of the presentation lasts around 20 minutes, making it easily used to educate others and encourage them to conserve renewable energy and its sources.
