LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - NASA scientists confirmed liquid water flows during the summer months on the surface of Mars, adding to the debate of whether or not life did -or could- exist on the planet.
Consolmagno further explained, "We have no idea whether life is so rare that it never occurs anywhere, or so common that it occurs everywhere, and that's why we have to look at places life could be to see just how rare or how common it actually is."
He believes the discovery of life on another planet would give us a better idea of what God's personality looked like. He said, "If God chose to make a universe where we are the only creatures, that is interesting, that tells us something about God and us. If God creates a universe where life is everywhere, that gives is a different picture of God, but either way, we learn more about who the creator is."
The discovery reveals the water found on Mars may be made of salty and wet soil, which Consolmagno believes means the "kind of interactions and the kind of chemistry that goes on to make brine is not inconsistent with the possibility of some sort of microbial life underneath the surface."
What is certain at the moment is that further debate on life on Mars, and the possibility of creating a life on Mars, has been rekindled. No proof of life has been discovered on Mars, though the latest discovery is "certainly a step in the right direction."
