A new study from Harvard University has shown that the rise of sea levels has actually accelerated faster in the last two decades than previously thought, and may soon be threatening coastal regions all over the world, from Florida to Europe, India and Oceania.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The study looked at records from more than 600 tidal gauges, and found that the data from 1901 through 1990 that showed sea levels rising, were incomplete or inaccurate, and that sea levels had actually risen less than reported, meaning that the rise in sea levels from 1991 and up was actually higher than previously assumed.

The study's lead author, Carling Hay, told Reuters that the new analysis "suggests that the acceleration in the past two decades is 25 percent higher than previously thought."
Sea levels rose an average of about 0.05 inches each year during 1901-1990, but in the last decade they have instead risen a little more than 0.11 inches per year over the past two decades.
These new findings are likely to change most projections about sea levels in the future, primarily those which look at data from historical trends.

A member of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and world expert on sea levels through history, Stefan Rahmstorf, said that further analysis will be required to actually create an accurate picture of the rise of sea levels through the 20th century.
During an interview with Reuters he said that the Harvard study confirms that the "sea level is rising and the rise has accelerated, with the most recent rates being the highest on record."
