Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The dramatic footage was captured by storm chasers Justin Cox and Chance Coldiron as they pursued the twister along the highway and reported in to the news desk. Their updates provided residents on the ground with immediate information as the twister tore through neighborhoods and destroyed homes, schools, and businesses.
From the outset, the tornado was understood to be serious, but it quickly exceeded the most dire expectations as it widened. Within minutes, it struck a home or outbuilding, then made its way towards a freeway.
At one point, just as the tornado crosses the freeway, one of the spotters shouts "Those are cars! Oh my gosh, those are cars!"
The desperation of the on-air news reporters and the chasers is evident in their voice as it becomes clear the tornado is a deadly event. Not long into the disaster, reporters announce the declaration that a "tornado emergency" is in effect. A tornado emergency is the highest level of warning the National Weather Service can issues and it means that a tornado is actively destroying inhabited areas.
One of the spotters becomes sure his own home is lost as the tornado strikes his neighborhood. Dutifully, he continues radioing updates on the disaster.
The Moore tornado killed 24 people, injured 377 more, and did at least $2 billion in estimated damages.
