Newsday (MCT) - Controversial radio show host Don Imus announced Monday morning that he has Stage II prostate cancer.
Highlights
Imus, 68, made the announcement on his show Monday on WABC-AM.
"I have great confidence in my doctors," Imus, 68, said on air shortly before 9 a.m. "I'll be fine. If I'm not fine, then I won't be fine. And it's not a big deal."
He then told listeners: "The prognosis couldn't be better."
Stage II means the disease has not spread outside the prostate, according to the National Cancer Institute.
The iconic shock jock caused a national furor in spring 2007 when he called members of the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos."
Imus was fired by CBS in the wake of the Rutgers comment, made on his morning drive-time show on WFAN 660 AM. Imus returned to the airwaves when he was hired by ABC later in 2007.
