Here are the high points:

"Scrubs" returns Tuesday on ABC: New network, same old bunch of lovable chuckleheads at Sacred Heart Hospital. Courteney Cox has a guest arc as the new head doctor.

"Nip/Tuck," Tuesday on FX: In recent seasons, this drama about plastic surgery has been more tiresome than saucily provocative. At least the new season features Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") in a guest role.

"Damages," Wednesday on FX: Timothy Olyphant, William Hurt, Ted Danson and Marcia Gay Harden join Glenn Close in this classy legal thriller.

"24," Jan. 11 on Fox: When Jack Bauer returns _ finally _ he'll face grilling from Congress regarding the methods he's used to hunt down and question bad guys.

"Friday Night Lights," Jan. 16 on NBC: The third season of this excellent small-town drama finds Tami Taylor (Connie Britton) as the principal of Dillon High school, where her husband, Eric (Kyle Chandler), is trying to win another state football championship.

"Battlestar Galactica," Jan. 16 on Sci Fi: The great space opera enters the home stretch: Only 11 more hours until the gripping drama wraps up for good March 20.

"Flight of the Conchords," Jan. 18 on HBO: This delightfully surreal comedy returns with unsuccessful folk singers Bret and Jemaine trying their hand at writing ad jingles and coming into conflict with their put-upon manager, Murray. (HBO's "Big Love" also returns Jan. 18.)

"The United States of Tara" debuts Jan. 18 on Showtime: The cable network's big 2009 premiere is about a woman with multiple personalities. Toni Collette stars, and Chicago's Diablo Cody (who won an Oscar for "Juno") wrote the script. (Showtime's "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" and "L Word" also return Jan. 18.)

"Lost," Jan. 21 on ABC: Will Jack be able to reunite the Oceanic 6 and get them back to the island? What the heck happened to the unfortunate souls who were left behind? No doubt we'll get some of our questions answered even as the show's writers torment us with new mysteries.

"Burn Notice," Jan. 22 on USA: Michael Westen's been forced to work for the people who burned him, via his no-nonsense handler, Carla. But Michael doesn't like to be forced to do anything, so expect more spy-versus-spy goodness in this seven-episode season.

"The Closer," Jan. 26 on TNT: Brenda Leigh Johnson and her team of LAPD detectives come back for a five-episode season.

"Trust Me" debuts Jan. 26 on TNT: Eric McCormack and Tom Cavanagh star in this comedic drama about ad men in Chicago.

"Dollhouse" debuts Feb. 13 on Fox: Joss Whedon's suspense thriller about a young woman who begins to resist the programming that wipes her mind clean after each job that she's sent on.
