MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - It was later revealed that the two-month old baby's mother had tried to smuggle him out of the country back to Papua New Guinea. ABSCBN News reported that there were no charges filed against the mother and they were allowed by the airport authorities to depart.

Vicente L. Guerzon Jr., the Manila International Airport Authority assistant general manager for security and emergency services, later identified the mother as Jenifer Pavolaurea, 25, who was questioned by the immigration due to her status as an overstaying alien, before the baby was even found.

She was a nursing graduate scheduled to depart with the 11 p.m. Air Niugini flight to Port Moresby.

He said that the single mom admitted she put the baby inside the bag in order to get pass security and immigration officials, to bring him with her to Papua New Guinea. She explained she lacked the necessary papers for him.

Pavolaurea was not the first person who has tried smuggling a child out of a country by putting it inside a bag.

Back in 2012, an Egyptian couple placed their child inside a bag after they were told they were going to be held a few days at the Sharjah International Airport, Egypt, until they had the child's passport and visa. Out of desperation to leave with their child to the United Arab Emirates, they placed him inside the luggage after the staff's shift ended. Their baby was found during a customs screening.

The Egyptian couple was arrested for endangering the life of their five-month-old baby through radiation exposure, unlike Pavolaurea who was allowed to depart while her child was turned over.
