LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - Dr. James Dobson, founder of the popular "Focus on the Family" and highly respected in the Catholic community for his evergreen advice on Christian family life and childrearing, has personally endorsed Governor Mike Huckabee for President.

Order "Catholics and Voting", how a faithful Catholic must also be a faithful citizen

Dr. Dobson made clear in numerous statements and past interviews that he would not endorse Senator John McCain. However, I wrote a story in November that he was set to endorse the former Governor from Arkansas. It was based upon reliable sources.

He opted not to do so.

In a written statement released last night, the reasons have now become clear. He was reticent to choose between Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, both of whom he saw as pro-life and pro-family.

Now, with yesterdays decision by Governor Romney to suspend his campaign, the evangelical leader has decided to give his endorsement to Governor Huckabee.

"The decision by Gov. Mitt Romney to put his campaign 'on hold' changes the political landscape," Dr. Dobson said. "His [Huckabee's] unwavering positions on the social issues, notably the institution of marriage, the importance of faith and the sanctity of human life, resonate deeply with me and with many others."

Governor Huckabee surprised many pundits on "Super Tuesday" with his unexpectedly strong showing.

There have been repeated efforts to paint his support as narrow, using references to his being an "evangelical" candidate.

The surprise showing on Tuesday and the demographics of his support demonstrate that the former Governor from Hope, Arkansas has reached beyond the evangelical community to Catholics, blue collar workers and many other constituencies who share his pro-life, pro-family and pro-poor convictions.

What effect this endorsement will have remains to be seen.
However, Mike Huckabee has shown himself to be unpredictable on many occasions during this campaign.

Senator McCain has emerged as the presumptive nominee of the Republicans, a Goliath of sorts. However, as I have written before, this contemporary David may just have those five smooth stones ready.
