LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Ron Paul's non-profit Campaign for Liberty is in a fight with the IRS, which has targeted the group for extra scrutiny. The IRS is demanding Campaign for Liberty reveal its donor list, a demand the group has refused to comply with.
That refusal has led to a fine. Ron Paul suggested the group would also refuse to pay the fine, insisting they are right.
Pray for our leaders, that justice is done.
Megan Stiles, the communications director for Campaign for Liberty told the Washington Examiner, "There is no legitimate reason for the IRS to know who donates to Campaign for Liberty. We believe the First Amendment is on our side as evidenced by cases such as NAACP v. Alabama and International Union UAW v. National Right to Work. Many 501(c)(4) organizations protect the privacy of their donors in the very same way as Campaign for Liberty. For some reason the IRS has now chosen to single out Campaign for Liberty for special attention. We plan to fight this all the way."
Ron Paul in an email to the group wrote: Paying this outrageous extortionist fine - just to exercise our rights as American citizens to petition our government - may even be cheaper in the short run, but it'll just embolden an alphabet soup of other federal agencies to come after us."
According to Paul, the rule the IRS is trying to impose on Campaign for Liberty is rarely enforced.
Stiles said she was concerned the IRS could "mistakenly" release the donor list to the public. Although such a release is forbidden, the IRS has done so before, claiming the release was a "mistake."
The IRS is less trusted now than ever. With Lois Lerner acting as head of the department responsible for harassing conservative groups and now facing jail over her continued refusal to answer questions before Congress, trust in the IRS has never been lower. The agency already has a track record of harassment and mistakes, as well as spotty and biased enforcement.
