.LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - If the drafter proposal is approved, it would direct government agents to screen thousands of minors from Honduras to see if they could enter the U.S. as refugees, and would be the first American refugee effort in a nation that can reach the U.S. by land.
Be a light in the darkness with "prayer and action."
Meanwhile, Texas Governor Rick Perry plans to deploy 1,000 Texas National Guard troops down to the border in order to help deal with the immigration crisis, which has hit Texas especially hard.
Critics were quick to attack the President's proposal, saying it would redefine the legal definition of a refugee and would only increase the flow of illegal immigration to the U.S. but administration officials believe that they could enact the plan through executive action, which does not require congressional approval.
Since the beginning of October 2013, more than 45,000 unaccompanied minors have illegally entered the U.S. through Mexico, mostly from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, fleeing deadly drug violence and gang warfare which have torn the countries apart.
Administration officials have stressed that no decision had been made to move forward yet, saying that this idea is just one of many which is being discussed by officials at the White House and the Departments of State, Homeland Security, Justice, and Health and Human Services.
Regardless, it is clear that President Obama may push through his plans without congressional approval via executive order, a move which may severely hamper his party come the mid-term elections.
