LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Chicago officials met on July 21 to discuss the city's recent surge in gun violence, including the death of an 11-year-old girl who was shot and killed by a stray bullet.
Help God's love light up these dark times.
Shamiya Adams was brought to a nearby hospital in critical condition on July 18, after a stray bullet struck her while she was sitting on the floor of a friend's bedroom. She was pronounced dead the following morning, reported Cook County Medical Examiner's Office spokesman Anthony Brucci.
"Every morning, I wake up and I cry," the girl's mother, Shaneetha Goodloe, told a local CNN affiliate. "I just can't believe it.
"She used to tell me every day, give me a letter every day-how much she loved me, how I was the best mother in the world," she said. "And I will never hear that again from her."
The girls mother urged anyone who had information about the shooting to speak up: "If you know anything, you should say something because this wasn't for her. This was not for my child. She was not supposed to die from a bullet to her brain."
Chicago Mayer Rahm Emanuel met with the superintendent of the Chicago Police department and community leaders to discuss violence in the city, an event scheduled even before the massive rise in gun violence.
"Our kids only get heard when there is a shot, be it a basketball shot or a bullet shot. There are other kids there," said Emanuel at the meeting. "Everybody says, 'So what are you going to do?' As if there's a single thing that's going to resolve this problem," he continued. "It is a community wide problem, which requires a community wide solution."
