ARLINGTON, VA (Catholic Online) - The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services gave awards that are intended to create or save about 800 law enforcement positions in more than 220 cities and counties around the United States. The grants will be funding over 600 new law enforcement positions and save roughly 200 positions that were either eliminated or in danger of being cut.
The initiative would help fulfill the promise President Obama made in his State of the Union address to help unemployed veterans get back to work in first-responder jobs and other positions that emphasize skills developed in the military.
Three Virginia departments have received grants totaling more than $1 million: Chesapeake Police Department, got $536,119 to fund five officers; Hopewell Bureau of Police got $248,382 for two officers; and Page County Sheriff's Department got $330,891 for three deputies.
