LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Trutanich was originally viewed as the favorite which makes the outcome quite a surprise. Lacey had 31.95%, Jackson 23.69%, and Trutanich 23.32%. If the numbers stay roughly the same, Lacey and Jackson will face each other in the November runoff. There have six candidates to succeed Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley, who is retiring this year after serving three terms.

The election was a first in almost 50 years that an official was not involved in the race for one of the most powerful offices in the county's criminal justice system. In fact, the office is responsible for prosecuting an estimated 60,000 felony cases every year.

Considered the early favorite, Trutanich faced five career prosecutors that were not known outside the local criminal-justice community. He raised about $1.5 million; however he made several campaign mistakes. For example, he made a pledge during the '09 election for city attorney to not run for a higher office until he finished two terms

The candidates are hoping to make history in the county.
