LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Not all relationships are romantic, nor should they be.

Every relationship is different but the one thing they all have in common is they require work to maintain.

So how do you make sure your relationships will last?

Successful marriages are easier to reach when the couple is grateful to have each other.

Successful marriages are easier to reach when the couple is grateful to have each other.

1. Be Grateful

You don't need to constantly thank the other person but little acts of kindness, encouragement and compliments show the other person you are grateful for their presence in your life.

No relationship can last without meaningful moments.

Choose the best way you can show your gratuity to the people in your life today!

2. Hang Out

Another great way to show you care is to make enough time to see them! Maybe your teenager isn't hanging out with you like (s)he used to.

They get it, life happens and they're trying to build their own circle of friends to hang out with, but to maintain a strong relationship, set aside a few hours here and there to just hang out.

Go to dinner, watch a movie, window shop, work on the car together.

However you choose to spend time with your spouse, child, love interest, or friend, just make sure it happens.

3. Put Yourself First

When you're involved in a relationship, whether it's old or a new one, remember you should be your own priority.

If your sister needs a babysitter for her seven children all day, ask yourself if you are prepared. If you can't find help, it's okay to tell her you can't handle things.

Don't take on more than you can handle for the sake of preserving a relationship and pleasing others. Your mental and physical health always comes first.

4. Keep Your Eyes Open

Sometimes those closest to us drop hints when they're troubled. They may be too ashamed or embarrassed to bring up their issues right away or be straightforward about it, but that's why you should keep your eyes peeled.

If your spouse is acting differently, has become withdrawn or shows other signs of trouble, talk to them. Help them resolve their problems. Sometimes, all you have to do is listen.

Whichever technique you choose, just remember everyone has bad days and it's our job to help friends and family to get through them.

Never forget to love.

Never forget to love.

We ask you, humbly: don't scroll away.

5. Stay Positive

No one wants to be around negative people. Those who can't find the silver lining tend to wear others down and create problems that otherwise would never have become issues.

Don't be that person.

Be positive, help your friends and family understand they are strong enough to get through whatever comes their way.

Sometimes, all it really takes to turn someone's bad day around is a kind word or gesture.
