Opponent of Iconoclasticism also called Nicetas of Constantinople. Born in Paphlagonia, AsiaMinor (modem Turkey), he was a relative of Empress Irene and served in the imperial court of Constantinople. He served as her official representative to the Council of Nicaea and was named prefect of Sicily. In 811 he gave up his political career and became a monk in Constantinople. At the onset of the Iconoclast policies of Emperor Leo V the Armenian, Nicetas fled with an icon of Christ, but was caught and placed under arrest. Years later, he and other monks were exiled, finally ending up at a farm in Katisia, Paphlagonia. He spent his remaining years there.
