Nicander was bishop of Myra (Dembre, Turkey). Hermas was a priest who served under Nicander. Both had received holy orders from Saint Titus, the disciple of the apostle Saint Paul. During the continuing persecution of Christians under the Roman emperors, Nicander and Hermas suffered brutal torture before being put to death. They were first dragged across jagged rocks by horses. Then the sides of their bodies were burned. In the end, they were buried alive.
