St. Gregory the Great - Pope and Doctor of the Church

St. Gregory the Great - Pope and Doctor of the Church

Feastday: September 3
Died: 604

St. Gregory, born at Rome about the year 540, was the son of Gordianus, a wealthy senator, who later renounced the world and became one of the seven deacons of Rome. After he had acquired the usual thorough education, Emperor Justin the Younger appointed him, in 574, Chief Magistrate of Rome, though he was only thirty-four years of age.

After the death of his father, he built six monasteries in Sicily and founded a seventh in his own house in Rome, which became the Benedictine Monastery of St. Andrew. Here, he himself assumed the monastic habit in 575, at the age of thirty-five.

After the death of Pelagius, St. Gregory was chosen Pope by the unanimous consent of priests and people. Now began those labors which merited for him the title of Great. His zeal extended over the entire known world, he was in contact with all the Churches of Christendom and, in spite of his bodily sufferings, and innumerable labors, he found time to compose a great number of works. He is known above all for his magnificent contributions to the Liturgy of the Mass and Office. He is one of the four great Doctors of the Latin Church. He died March 12, 604. He is the patron of teachers.

The "cartoon" about Gregory, "Saints Fun Facts" says he became a priest at the age of 35. I thought Gregory was a deacon when he was elected Pope and was ordained a priest and bishop as a result of that election.

I like him because he showed himself a true pastor in his administration, his care for the poor and needy, and in spreading and strengthening the faith of the people. He wrote many works on faith and morals. God has blessed him the spirit of wisdom with which he ruled the church as pope. What I learn as a priest is to be an effective administrator imbued with the pastoral care of the people. Justice imbued with mercy and compassion.St.Gregory guide me on the way to reach Christ Lord whom you loved and served with love and wisdom.

Pope St. Gregory the Great, Doctor of the Church, and patron saint of teachers. I pray for all teachers. Thank you for accepting me into this noble profession. I humbly thank you for the wonderful success that God has granted my students in the exams each year. As I begin a new academic year I pray to God for patience, ingenuity and creativity in all that I do in the classroom and outside. May I guide all who are in my care and raise good, kind and caring individuals, who are outstanding in character and diligence. Bless my work each day. I dedicate the coming year to you. Pray for me. Amen.

I love this site, and particlarly this Saint. Gregory the Great as said is the Patron Saint of Teachers and also of music. I want to be a musician or music teacher, and am planning on either choosing him or St. Anthony of Padua for my saint in confirmation.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Marsadee Flowers

P.S. Thank you Catholic.org for all the you have done for me.

The article is brief yet rich in order to know the life and background of St. Gregory the Great!
By the way, St. Gregory the Great is the patron saint of our batch inside the seminary. We call ourselves "The Defenders" since St. Gregory the Great defended also the Church from the errors of his time :D

    Pray for us
