St. Ronald
Died: 1158
A warrior chieftain in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. According to tradition, he made a vow to build a church, fulfilling the pledge by erecting the cathedral of St. Magnus at Kirkwall. Ronald was later murdered by a group of rebelling warriors and was venerated as a martyr at Kirkwall.

Saint Ronald was the saint of the plains. He will protect you from evil animal that will chase you. If you pray to St. Ronald the beast will slow down and often die. It is said the a bull was chasing he and a comrade through a field when the bull stopped in his tracks and fell to the ground dead. A nearby villager witnessed it and ran home to tell all. Upon their return they all slaughtered the animal and had a feast. St. Ronald later changed his name to McDonald.

There is a medieval saga (in Old Icelandic) dealing with the history of the earls of Orkney. Rögnvaldr (Ronald) is the most important character besides his uncle, St Magnús. All the information we have about him is from this text:
Orkneyinga Saga: The History of the Earls of Orkney. Transl. by Hermann Pálsson and Paul Edwards, London 1978.
Is there a book on Saint Ronald?
