Archbishop of Salzburg, Austria, and a supporter of the pope during the “Investiture Controversy.” Born to a noble family of Nuremberg, Germany, he was ordained and became a Benedictine in 1125 at Pruffening, Germany. As abbot of Biburg near Regensburg, he renewed the community. He became archbishop of Salzburg in 1146. When Pope Alexander III was faced with the “Investiture Controversy,” led by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and antipope Victor IV, Eberhard mediated the situation. He died while returning from one peacemaking mission.
