Bl. Alphonsus de Orozco

Feastday: September 19
Died: 1591

Mystic and court chaplain, born in 1500 in Oropesa, Spain. He studied at Talavera, Toledo, and Salamanca, and became an Augustinian at the age of twenty-two. St. Thomas of Villanova was one of his instructors, imbuing him with a spirit of recollection and prayer. Alphonsus, a popular preacher and confessor, served as prior of the Augustinians in Seville and then in 1554, at Valladolid. In 1556 he became a court preacher, and in 1561 accompanied King Philip II of Spain to Madrid. Throughout his court life, he did not engage in the pleasures or intrigues around him. His example of holiness made a great impression on the royal family and the nobles of Madrid. Alphonsus was given a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and wrote treatises on prayer and penance as Our Lady instructed him. He was beatified in 1881.

Blessed Alphonsus de Orozco pray for us all; pray for the film star Penelope Cruz that she may act the part of Teresa Avila in a truthful production; pray for the souls of Picasso and Miro, of Gaudi, Dali, Klee, even Franco; pray with Saint Thomas Villanova for the Church and her people; pray for those wrongly accused and slaughtered in purges; pray for those who falter and submit to their urges; pray that some see Mary smiling in her aura of eternal sweetness, gentle breezes rippling her white, no blue, no golden vestments silken flowing robes gown as grace within her words quiets fully our leaping hearts down as we see the roses at her feet and feel the majesty of her crown as she laughing surfs away on her serpent; oh Lamb of God who take away such sins as we cannot even imagine, would that Almodovar make such a film dear Teresa could laugh at in recognition; oh Yahweh Father Allah Abba ought Enoch be in pictures too; all my life and all my rest i leave to You, Father -- well then what Sophia hasn't already got, Amen Barbelo in these quantum times why tell these things to me: today's the day Keats wrote his last ode to Autumn and i have been crying -- o Heaven heave us up and out of tears for ever, Selah, Alleluia
