The Year of the Eucharist

by Monsignor Charles M. Mangan
Pope John Paul II has bequeathed to the Universal Church the Year of the Eucharist. These twelve months (October 2004--October 2005) are meant to be a period of intense reflection on the mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ.
Our meditation on the priceless treasure of the Most Holy Eucharist is to lead to greater conformity to the Risen Lord Jesus Who is the Eucharist.
No sincere Christian is audacious enough to believe that he can obtain the holiness to which he is summoned by the Almighty without prayer. Our efforts to adore and to imitate the Messiah really, truly and substantially present in the Holy Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine need to be nourished by genuine communication with our Creator.
What follows is a brief prayer I wrote that is designed to call attention to the Year of the Eucharist while simultaneously asking God to help us commemorate it the best we can.
Prayer for the Year of the Eucharist
O Lord our God, You are one God in three Divine Persons--the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. You have given countless gifts to us. Now we thank You for another blessing: the Year of the Eucharist that You have granted to us through the Vicar of Christ on earth, Pope John Paul II. We willingly profess that in the Most Holy Eucharist, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Son of Mary, is really, truly and substantially present under the appearances of bread and wine. Help us anew to adore and love this Most Blessed Sacrament. May we become more like You every time we receive Holy Communion and pray in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. And may this Year not conclude before we have consecrated ourselves without reserve to Our Eucharistic Jesus for Your glory, O Most Blessed Trinity, and for the salvation of souls, including our own. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
