Image of St. Lawrence Huong Van Nguyen The persecution of Catholics under the Vietnamese emperor Tu Duc was renewed in an 1855 decree, which ordered the beheading of all missionaries. It declared, "All churches, chapels, and seminaries must be burned down...By all means, this religion must be put to an end." The Vietnamese parish priest Father Lawrence Huong Van Nguyen, from Ke Sai, was arrested while visiting several paralyzed invalids. He was subsequently beheaded.
