Franciscan martyr of Japan. Born in the East Indies in 1556, of Portuguese descent, he served the Jesuits in Japan as a catechist before becoming as businessman. In 1591, he joined the Franciscans at Manila in the Philippines as a lay brother. Returning to Japan with St. Peter Baptist, he was crucified at Nagasaki. He was canonized in 1862.
