Lynch is elected as U.S. attorney general, taking over for Eric Holder.

Loretta Lynch has been confirmed as the new U.S. attorney general last Thursday. History is made as she became the first African-American woman to occupy such a crucial and distinct government position. Lynch was not present during the Senate confirmation, however, her dad, whom she identifies as her source of inspiration, was filling in for her during the awaited event.

She served as a US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, which is described as a tough job.

She has a Harvard Law degree, and was described as having a "steel and velvet" blend of a character by her supporters.

According to Professor Jon Gould of public policy and law at the American University, as the new attorney general, Lynch must first work to improve the relationship between the Justice Department and Congress.

Although this new position may prove difficult given that Lynch will have different things to do as the attorney general; the professor sees it as a crucial, basic element of success for the current Obama administration.

All Democratic senators supported Lynch, who also surprisingly gathered 10 votes from the Republicans, including that of the Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell.

According to reports, only Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was unable to vote at the actual confirmation due to a prior engagement.

Lynch expressed her top priorities are to "ensure the safety of all of our citizens, to protect the most vulnerable among us from crime and abuse, and to strengthen the vital relationships between America's brave law enforcement officers and the communities they are entrusted to serve," during the nomination hearing..
