LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - A 300-pound metal display intended to honor satan, has been pulled down by protestors who are opposed to its erection next to a traditional Nativity display.
The 300-pound, red and black satanic pentagram was erected by Preston Smith, an atheist. His intention was to be disruptive to the nearby display of a traditional Nativity scene in a public park in Boca Raton, Florida.
On Tuesday, protestors in a truck attached a chain to the heavy metal monument and pulled it down. The 10-toof talk structure fell, bent out of shape somewhat, but largely intact. A pair of passersbys later stood the structure back on its base.
The structure stands 20 feet from a Nativity scene. The Nativity scene is traditional, but recently atheists have protested its presence in a public park. They have therefore won the right to erect their monument. They decided to erect a 10-foot pentagram dedicated to satan, a fallen angel in which they do not claim to believe.
The also hoisted a banner on the monument. It reads, "Keep Saturn in Saturnalia," a reference to an ancient Roman pagan holiday dedicated to the Winter solstice. Some atheists claim Saturnalia is the origin of the modern Christmas holiday.
Police are investigating the incident, which is the third incident of vandalism this season.
While vandalism is inexcusable, it should be obvious that satanism and the celebration of Saturnalia, are not sincere religious beliefs. Nor are they associated with our modern celebration of Christmas, which is exclusively dedicated to the birth of Christ.
Everyone agrees atheists and satanists have freedom of speech. However, there is no reason why that freedom of speech must be exercised virtually on top of a Christian Nativity scene at Christmas. Why not in a different location, or at a different time? Why must it coincide perfectly and in proximity to a Christian celebration?
The reason is simply to be disruptive to the Christian celebration. It has nothing to do with sincere belief. What it is, quite literally, is another form of vandalism.
