MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The UN has received reports that at least 30 people have been executed by ISIS for being gay. The very first UN Security Council meeting was held at the United States headquarters in New York and focused on the barbaric treatment of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people in territories held by ISIS.
During the meeting, Jessica Stern, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, told the council that militants seized areas in Iraq and Syria, claiming they have been punishing homosexuals by stoning, firing squads, beheadings and pushing them from tall buildings. The claims were accompanied with images of beheaded men and homosexuals being pushed by militants on a rooftop.
Several horrific images of hooded ISIS fighters stoning a man to death in Nineveh were posted online. The man had apparently cheated on his wife and his punishment was death. Stern explains that the fear the Islamic State has been spreading continues to fuel violence by other militias and private sectors that are against LGBT lifestyles.
The Islamic group, which has already managed to take control of nearly one-third of Syria and Iraq, has been raping and killing people who are perceived as gay, transgender and lesbian.
Stern called for support and specific strategies to help combat LGBT attacks. During the meeting a proposal for the UN to relocate people to places where their human rights can be acknowledged was mentioned, with U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power claiming, "It's about time... that the fate of LGBT persons who fear for their lives around the world [take] center stage."
President Barack Obama has been a strong supporter of LGBT rights and ruled the legalization of same-sex marriage in all 50 American states.
Chile's President Michelle Bachelet has also declared her support for same-sex marriage and plans to legalize it in their country. However, the LGBT community continues to experience oppression, violence and discrimination due to their sexual orientation around the world.
