Many men report that they feel out of control with their sexual lives

The Internet has brought all kinds of sexually explicit material into the home and workplace. At one time only accessible by mail order and shady brick-and-mortar companies, hardcore pornography is now available with the touch of a keystroke. The impact this has had on society has yielded surprising results, as a recent study on pornography-addicted men has shown.

There is enough evidence to support that pornography has a negative effect on overall quality of life.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - There are 420 million Web pages dedicated to porn. Now, scientists at Cambridge University have studied the brain scans of porn addicts. They have discovered that these scans look exactly like those of drug addicts. Being so readily available, there is a growing concern that it is beginning to effect human brains, relationships and even our bodies.

A recent survey of a Reddit community called NoFap has helped researchers open the door to a better understanding of the effects of pornography on our lives.

While in no way conclusive, the statistics give one pause.

1. Arousal for porn addicts actually declined with the same partner, while those who regularly found different partners were able to continue their arousal. Known as the "Coolidge Effect," or novelty-seeking behavior, pornography does train the viewer to expect constant newness.

2. One in five people who regularly watch porn admitted to feeling controlled by their own sexual desires.

3. Twelve percent of those surveyed reported watching five or more hours of Internet porn every week. 59 percent report watching between 4 - and 15 hours of porn every week.

4. Almost 50 percent say they have never had sex in their lives -- meaning their only experience with intimacy was with their computers.

5. Forty-two percent of male college students report visiting porn sites regularly.

6. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed developed a regular porn habit between the ages of 12 and 14. An alarming 16 percent said they started watching before they were 12.

7. Sixty-four percent report that their tastes in porn have become more extreme or deviant.

8. Among men between 27 to 31 years of age, 25 percent are disinterested in sex with their partner and 34 percent have "performance issues."

9. After committing to not viewing pornography, 60 percent of those surveyed felt that their sexual functions had improved.

10. And 67 percent had an increase in energy levels as well as productivity.

In short, there is enough evidence to support that pornography has a negative effect on overall quality of life.
