Frequent talk show guest claimed ability to talk to dead, see the future

Frequent talks show host and psychic Sylvia Browne was a devout believer in reincarnation, claimed to be able to speak to the dead and could predict the future. Many people now are wondering aloud if she predicted her own demise - Brown has passed away at the age of 77.

While popular, Sylvia Browne's predictions were never 100 percent accurate. Browne told Cleveland kidnapping victim Amanda Berry's mother her daughter was dead, when in fact Berry had been held prisoner by Ariel Castro for 10 years before being found alive last May.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "Sylvia graduated today," a message on Browne's Facebook page read. "She was surrounded by family and friends. What a legacy. She shared so much. We will carry on her knowledge with hypnosis and 'Journey of the Soul' and her many books. What a great party they must be having on the Other Side. Bless everyone."

Browne passed away at a San Jose, California hospital. A cause of death has not been given.

Browne made frequent appearances on TV shows including "Unsolved Mysteries," "Loveline with Dr. Drew" and "The Montel Williams Show," on which she was a weekly guest for 17 years.

"I, like so many of you, lost a friend today," Williams said in the posting on Browne's Web site. "But, as has been for the last 20 years, she'll always remain a part of me."

As to her psychic abilities, Browne once confessed, "I don't know how I do it," on CNN's "Larry King Live." "I've done it all my life."

"Browne's certainty in the existence of reincarnation remained a central theme in her philosophy and she believed it held the key to understanding life, though never imposing her values upon anyone," said her Web site. "Often, she had been quoted as saying, 'Take with you what you want and leave the rest behind.'"

The author of more than 50 books, 22 of them made the New York Times Bestsellers List. She was also consulted in several missing persons cases over the years. She received harsh criticism for her predictions, including one involving Cleveland kidnapping victim Amanda Berry. Browne told Berry's mother she was dead, when in fact Berry had been held prisoner by Ariel Castro for 10 years before being found alive last May.

Browne grew up in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to California in 1964. She founded the Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research in 1974 ,and in 1986, she formed the nonprofit organization, Society of Novus Spiritus.

Browne's survivors include her husband, Michael Ulery; sons Christopher and Paul Dufresne; three grandchildren, Angelia, Jeffrey, and William; and a sister, Sharon Bortolussi.

A private memorial is planned.
