Three Cheers for Margie Manczko!
by Matt Abbott
Margie Manczko, the young Assistant Director of the Archdiocese of Chicago Respect Life Office, is one gutsy pro-lifer. She did something that, frankly, many Catholics wouldn’t have the courage or even the knowledge to do.
We happened to attend the same weekday evening Mass at a parish here in Chicago. After the Mass had ended, and as people were filing out of the chapel, Margie confronted a woman who was wearing a sticker in support of pro-abortion Illinois Comptroller and Democratic senatorial candidate Dan Hynes. (On Tuesday, March 16, Hynes lost the primary election to another pro-abortion Democrat.)
“Dan Hynes? Do you know that he’s ‘pro-choice’,” Margie asked the woman, who then became angry and defensive.
“Oh, I don’t care,” the woman retorted while turning away from Margie.
Margie went on to say that one should vote one’s (properly-formed) conscience, charitably and clearly indicating that Catholics should never vote for a pro-abortion candidate. Nor, she said, should they be “politicking” in the church, especially for a candidate who does not respect the sanctity of human life.
The woman’s final response to Margie: “Leave me alone!”
Here one sees the difference between a faithful, knowledgeable Catholic (Margie Manczko), and a Catholic who is either very ill-informed, or just plain foolish (the woman Margie confronted). Margie engaged in fraternal correction, and should be applauded for it. As should everyone else who stands up for life, in any capacity.
As for Dan Hynes, he supposedly is a Catholic. He should know better than to espouse the mythical “right” to abortion. He should know that life must be protected from the moment of conception until natural death. He should know this.
But, like so many other politicians, Dan thumbs his nose at the natural moral law - just to get a few extra votes.
Such a pity.
