God is Love, Love is God
By Dr.Chris Anthony
Hardly a year has passed and our Church is obsessed with declaring our beloved late Pope John Paul II a saint.
Similar action was taken to declare Mother Teresa not long ago.
I have no objection making them saints as they were great and brought the love of God to all mankind, regardless of race, creed and social standing. I am a great admirer of both these people. Their actions in this world already proved their worth as saints. This is acknowledged not by just Catholics but all other faiths as well.
What baffles me most is the way the Church is rushing to create saints out of them when there are so many such “saints” in our midst whom we do not acknowledge.
We are taught that God is Love which is true but the phrase Love is God is equally true. Whoever has love in his heart he has God in him.
Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II and all other great men and women were normal human beings with all the weaknesses and shortcomings like all of us. They had no secret. The greatest weapon they possessed to gain victory over the evils of this material world was the extraordinary LOVE for GOD and FELLOW HUMANS. This should be an example for all of us to follow. By declaring them as saints would only alienate them from us as “super humans”.
Instead of spending money and time performing rituals to create saints, it is better for the Church to emphasize on their examples on earth. The Church should encourage us to emulate them in our own lives in the community.
We all have the gift of God, LOVE, within us. All we have to do is be unselfish and share it with others and we too will be saints in the eyes of the Lord.
