Press Ignores Catholic Response
(c) Raymond L. Flynn
Journalism in Boston has sunk to a new low. For years we thought the media was just sloppy with the facts. Then we realized that much of the bias was nothing short of being anti-Catholic. Now we are witnessing something more blatant by the media - the refusal to publish comments by prominent Catholics in order to provide some level of balance to a story. When your opinion is different from those of the media, they will simply ignore you or refuse to make your opinion part of the story.
The media is certainly entitled to present their opinion on any issue they want - on the editorial pages. But don't they have an obligation to at least inform the public about the other side of the story?
The Boston Globe this week, in responding to its commissioned public opinion poll, ran two days of front-page stories about how Catholics feel about the Catholic Church and its future. In neither story was a Church official or knowledgeable Catholic quoted. In fact, I even sent the Globe a statement but it was ignored, as is routine by the paper. It's clear what the media is doing in giving their side only.
My only question is, when will traditional Catholics wake up and realize what is happening to them? They are being manipulated and lied to by newspapers that were recently forced to admit that they have been doing this for years. Yes, some of us knew it. But now, everybody knows it. We must demand that something be done about it. If not, the public will only read the media's side, which is sometimes intentionally distorted.
