Please Save Life, Truth, Moral Virtue and the goodness of our Society even of the Weakest of our Citizens

President Bust has told us- "One American helping another is the way to heal our nation."

If, in the light of ethics and moral theology, we seek the true meaning of law and concord, we will discover that it flows not only from human interpretations that are partial and incomplete, but also from grace; not from individuals or groups deciding what is right, such as those who are set over courts, who admittedly live in imperfection and who may or may not have sound minds or wills informed by a true understanding. These kinds of interpretations may stem from a lack of charity which is the supreme virtue uniting all of the virtues- uniting justice with goodness and mercy.

The role of the governor or governors is to safeguard the common good and see that it is applied properly to individual persons. Therefore, at times a disregard of the fleeting decisions of court interpretations is required if the governor would act to safeguard the life and goodness of persons and for the common good. Such is the case when acting on behalf of innocent life - to safeguard persons and society. The spirit of true law which flows from divine law and even grace, sometimes calls for an act of clemency or mercy, by the singular authority of a governor, in order to prevent a grave evil that would result from those erroneous decisions of courts below, which may be overturned in the near future. These are the decisions of a few acting hastily and wrongfully. This act of clemency is necessary at the present time to avoid a grave evil.

This situation calls for executive intervention, either by the President or governor, and even citizens befriending an innocent life- caretakers- because judicial interpretations have failed to follow the true law- because true law does not act against the common good, which is always to preserve justice, goodness, and virtuous life, among equal individuals before God. An interpretation of the constitutional right of every individual to life, liberty and for the pursuit of happiness is denied when a judge or court interprets that it is just to destroy an individual, thus depriving a person or persons from charity and basic goodness- depriving the family and prohibiting society from acting with goodness and charity toward one another.

If we do not use the power and rule of law to uphold and to safeguard the basic dignity or liberty of an individual and the common good; if we do not use the rule of law to safeguard the natural and divine right of a mother and father or friends to give food and drink and love to their beloved daughter or friend, then there is something unnatural, inhumane and vicious about the interpretation and reasoning of the court and individuals sitting as judges.

In this case, it is only virtuous that the governor and persons in authority may seek a dispensation from the ordinary discourse and disputes of interpretations of a few who are acting against the good instincts and good common sense of the parents. Heed the persons and voices promoting innocent life, moral virtue, the uniting of science and law with ethics, those who protect the purity of the conscience and integrity of intellect, will and human spirit. It is just and good to use governmental authority given according to the singularly good divine and natural law given through the attributes of justice, goodness, mercy, concord and peace. It is without the grace and charity that should be bound to the truth of humankind especially as human beings of God and of Christ to deny the basic virtues of human life that rests with grace, and not only to deny heroic virtue that belongs to the saints, but also to deny natural human virtues that even act according to a natural good.

The divine law that says do not kill is also reflected within the natural law- wherefore it is natural to feed and give drink to someone who is handicapped whether temporarily or permanently. It is natural for parents to give drink and food to their daughter, as well as natural goodness for the basic attention of friendship and stewardship. We do not know everything about the soul, mind and life of Terri who is a human being and fellow American citizen- how is it possible to judge that her life is not worth saving and protecting? It would seem that our governors should act with heroic virtue to go even beyond the ordinary duties and not to allow court decisions to prevail especially when they are perceived by greater authorities to be unethical.

It is virtuous for a governor or authorities not to allow shortsightedness, indifference or narrow-mindedness to win out over the good of society. Those in the courts are obviously influenced by secularism and blinded with the indifference of ungodliness. It has never been ethical to starve to death a wounded handicapped citizen. It is also against the American ideal to deliberately starve to death even an animal such as a dog.

It is heroic virtue to intervene and to give the Schindler family and their daughter Terri an opportunity for continued life and friendship- faith, hope and charity- that will result in promoting a culture of life. An intervention for clemency will also give the opportunity for further reflection, for those fighting for life to gather more resources to prove their case. It will give all persons time to be more mindful, to examine their consciences more fully and to step towards the influence of charity and divine grace so that the love of God and neighbor will prevail.

As Pope John Paul wrote in the encyclical- the Gospel of Life- whose ten year anniversary we celebrate- there should not be a choice for citizens - or those responsible for the law - to choose death for any human being, especially when innocent, and to place obstacles against basic love between child and neighbor. It is heroic virtue for a governor and those in authority in our country to intervene to preserve the life and liberty of Terri who has been poorly treated according to records by her husband who persistently wishes her death and denies her basic privileges. Give her guardianship to her parents who consistently love her and act as guardians should. We do not know what good the future may bring with the continued life of Terri Schiavo, or what evil will be with those who sin mortally by committing the grave act of euthanasia.

It is further promulgation of the culture of death to block life and virtue from this handicapped individual, her family and her friends. As Pope John Paul has suggested- it is against the law of Christ and basic moral virtue to impose deprivation of basic water and nourishment upon an innocent human being- to impose a choice of death upon the innocent. Such a choice is a mortal and grave act against neighbor, and God.

In the words of Christ 'Who so ever shall give drink to the least of these, will give drink unto me. Whoever denies, rejects the least among you, rejects me.'

An interpretation of law that is according to true judgment, does not - cannot - promulgate regulations against innocent life. Please do not allow a culture of death to be spread further amongst the already polluted air of American cities. Please do something to save our society from further immorality, mortal sin and death of the human spirit- a spirit that is in its essence ordered to life that is with both natural virtues and grace, a life ordained to something more pure and good, that is, the law of Christ with its abundant and miraculous fruits.
