PBM Receives Award for Theology of the Body Resources

BOSTON, MA (July 30, 2010) - During the first National Theology of the Body Congress, the Theology of the Body Institute honored Pauline Books & Media with an inaugural award for their work on John Paul II's groundbreaking catechesis on the human person. The award was inscribed with the following: "In recognition for your pioneering work and outstanding achievements in educating others about and promoting Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body Daughters of St. Paul."

Pauline Books & Media (PBM) has a long and distinguished history with John Paul II's work, beginning in 1981 when the publishing house compiled JPII's general audiences on his perspective of the human person into the book Original Unity of Man & Woman. PBM followed up that bestselling title with another volume of the Pope's talks in 1983 titled Blessed Are the Pure of Heart: Sermon on the Mount, leading to Reflections on Humanae Vitae: Conjugal Morality & Spirituality (1984) and Theology of Marriage & Celibacy (1986).

In 1997, PBM combined these four well-received, highly-acclaimed volumes into a single larger work that they titled Theology of the Body: Human Love in the Divine Plan. This revolutionary tome garnered the attention of priests, religious, lay person, the media, and everyone in between.

Several years later, internationally-renowned scholar Dr. Michael M. Waldstein approached PBM, promising new insights and a more accurate translation of Theology of the Body, sparking immediate interest from the publisher and editors of the original work. Dr. Waldstein noted a compelling need for a systematic perspective that considered the theology of the body as a whole and he was led to discover, alongside colleague Fr. Wojtek Janusiewicz, an outline of the great work by the Pope himself in the John Paul II Archives in Rome. After much study and examination, Dr. Waldstein discovered that JPII's original catechesis in Polish, which had been translated into Italian for the general audiences. This original Polish manuscript contained an elaborate system of section and sub-section headings that were vital to the meaning of the theology of the body. Dr. Waldstein worked with PBM to create a new edition of the volume titled Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body, now considered the most reliable version of John Paul II's catechesis.

Along with this great tome, PBM has published many other titles related to the theology of the body, including such notable titles as Fr. Brian Bransfield's The Human Person: According to John Paul II and Katrina Zeno's Discovering the Feminine Genius, both of whom were speakers at the National Theology of the Body Congress. Other noteworthy titles from PBM include Dr. William May's Theology of the Body in Context, Christopher West's The Theology of the Body Explained, Theology of the Body Made Simple, God's Plan for You, and Women, Sex, & the Church: A Case for Catholic Teaching, among others.

Pauline Books and Media is the publishing house of the Daughters of St. Paul, an international Congregation of women religious whose mission is evangelization through the means of social communication. They operate and staff thirteen retail book centers in the U.S. and English-speaking Canada and a publishing and distribution center in Boston, Massachusetts.
